Basement Building Codes

Recently, I was scouring the internet for amazing basement design ideas. I was thoroughly impressed by all the gorgeous basements from all over the country. People have done some beautiful things! But… I have some bad news… all these wonderful design ideas aren’t always a possibility for all homeowners.

Everyone must adhere to building and zoning codes. Every town has their own rules. Adding an in-law apartment with a kitchen to your basement may not even be allowed by your town! But building codes are there for a reason, they exist to protect homeowners from dangerous circumstances.

Egress windows, electrical standards, and insulation requirements are examples of building codes created not to ruin your design dreams, but to ensure that your new basement doesn’t damage your home or injure your family.

When thinking about finishing your basement, remember to choose professionals who are familiar with basement codes, who pull permits, and who will work responsibly. These professionals may not be able to get you a giant soaking tub in your basement bathroom, but they’ll be able to provide you with a safe and secure space, a space you can feel confident in.
